The world is off-track to meet the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
We are moving backwards in efforts to eliminate hunger and malnutrition, and ensure food security for all.
The complexity and magnitude of these global trends and realities are daunting, compounded further by the pandemic, conflict and the climate crisis.
In the face of these issues, there are four goals we need to achieve to ensure a better future for all.
Better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.
The Four Betters
Goals for a Better Tomorrow
The FAO believes that by reaching the most disadvantaged communities, innovating through science, data and technology, ensuring gender and youth inclusion, and enlisting the support of governments and organizations while protecting our natural resources, a better life for all is possible.
The Four Betters reflect the interconnected economic, social and environmental dimensions of efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems.
Better production means creating sustainable crop, livestock, fisheries and forestry production systems that are efficient, resilient, innovative and competitive, and create inclusive business opportunities for all.
Better nutrition means achieving food security and improving nutrition in all its forms by working with governments to create improved policies, and advocate for better school food and nutrition programmes.
Better environment is about protecting, restoring and promoting the sustainable use of our natural resources while addressing the ongoing climate crisis.
Better life is about working towards a world without inequalities, by advocating for rural youth, women and marginalized communities’ access to science, innovation, markets and education to make food value chains more inclusive.
Prioritising the sustainable production of healthy, nutritious food takes us one step closer to ending world hunger and reducing malnutrition.
Functional agrifood systems leverage science, data, technology, innovation and investments to conserve biodiversity, empower women, marginalised communities and youth, boost economies and power future generations, leaving no one behind.
