NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has taken a public swipe at Scott Morrison, demanding Australia stop deporting its people and problems to New Zealand.
Australia's deportation policy includes anyone who has committed a serious criminal offence to be deported to their country of origin.
Around 2,000 New Zealanders have been deported under the policy,
Ms Ardern said some of those who are deported arrived in Australia when they were children and only have tenuous links to New Zealand.
During a press conference with Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Ms Ardern attacked the policy.
“Australia is well within its rights to deport individuals who break your laws. New Zealand does the same. But we have a simple request – send back Kiwis. Genuine Kiwis," she said.
"Do not deport your people and your problems."
Mr Morrison said the government will maintain the policy as it's "in Australia's national interest".
