Emerald Twilight is perhaps the most controversial Green Lantern story ever told. Published in 1994, it was the followup to first the Death of Superman and then Batman: Knightfall. Green Lantern's sales had been stagnant, and it was time for a major shake up, as would affect most major DC heroes of the time, such as Aquaman losing his hand and the death of Green Arrow, but those came after this. Hal Jordan loses his hometown of Coast City, and he refuses to accept the loss. He turns on the Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians of the Universe, determined to take the power for himself, to do what he believes is right and fix time itself. Emerald Fallout is Hal's first real appearance as Parallax, his first fight against major DC heroes and ex Green Lantern Guy Gardner.
All of it is a prelude to Zero Hour, when Parallax destroyed the DC universe from the beginning of time to the end of time, and tried to recreate it in his image. That will be my next project. While controversial at first, replacement Green Lantern Kyle Rayner did become quite popular in his time, serving with honor in the JLA and eventually helping to bring back the Corps and the Guardians, earning him the name Torchbearer. But it all began here, with Emerald Twilight, a story I've always loved, and I'm very happy to be able to share with you. Personally, I've always though that in Geoff Johns' Rebirth, the Spectre actually changed time and made Parallax a fear demon, that it originally was just a man pushed beyond his limits and letting nothing stop him, but Spectre changed that to absolve Hal of his guilt and rebirth him as a modern character. It's not allowed for mortals to do but the Spectre is a literal agent of The Presence, DC's version of God.
