#Leviticus16 details the ceremonies to be performed on #YomKippur, the #DayofAtonement, which is the #holiestday of the year for the Israelites. The chapter provides instructions for #Aaron, the #highpriest, on how to conduct sacrifices to cleanse himself, his household, and the entire community of Israel from their sins. This involves a series of intricate rituals:
Preparation: Aaron is to bathe and dress in special linen garments, setting aside his usual priestly vestments.
Sacrifices for Purification: He offers a bull as a sin offering for himself and his family, and a ram as a burnt offering.
Ceremony of the Two Goats: Two goats are chosen by lot; one is sacrificed as a sin offering for the people, and the other, known as the "scapegoat," is sent into the wilderness to symbolically carry away the sins of the nation.
Cleansing the Sanctuary: Aaron makes atonement for the #HolySanctuary, the Tent of Meeting, and the altar by sprinkling them with the blood of the bull and the #goat to purify them from the impurities of the #Israelites.
Sending the Scapegoat: The scapegoat is sent into the desert after Aaron lays both hands on its head and confesses over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites.
Conclusion of Rituals: Aaron removes the linen garments, bathes again, and performs additional burnt offerings for himself and the people to conclude the #purificationprocess.
The chapter emphasises the importance of this day as a permanent ordinance, to be observed with fasting and rest, as a means of purification from sin and impurity annually.
