El Peñol Rock
La Piedra del Peñol (aka El Peñon de Guatapé) is a massive rock formation (a monolith) of 220 meters and 708 steps to the top that offers breathtaking panoramic views. It used to be a place for adoration for local indigenous people in pre hispanic times. It was first climbed in 1954 by Luis Eduardo Villegas, Ramón Díaz and Pedro Nel Ramírez who challenged each other to do so.

Guatape Town and It's Zocalos.
Guatapé is one of the most colorful towns in the world. Its streets are adorned by traditional picturesque houses, each with a different “Zocalo” that represents the characteristics of the family who owns it, (their profession, their business, or something they take pride on). Strolling through the streets and observing the different Zocalos, which are basically works of art is the best way to get to know Guatapé and the culture of its people.

The Lake
The lake in front of Guatapé is actually a reservoir that was built to generate hydroelectric power. To do it, they had to flood a big part of the territory (around 74km sq.), which lead to the complete demolishment of El Peñol town (which was rebuilt where it now sits) and part of Guatapé town too. Today, the lake offers plenty of plans to do from swimming ([ Ссылка ]) to wakeboard & ski lessons. ([ Ссылка ])The water is clean, refreshing and safe for swimming (taking normal precautions). Its perfect for a kayak or paddle board SUP trips ([ Ссылка ]), you can also rent a yet ski for a more thrilling ride ([ Ссылка ]) or a boat for longer adventure through the lake.
The River & Waterfalls
Guatapé river has lots of breathtaking spots to chill, have a picnic and enjoy a swim or the waterfalls ([ Ссылка ]) This places are mainly visited by locals and they are private and secluded (most of the time). Birdwatching ([ Ссылка ]) and learning the basics to birding is also something incredible that can be done while visiting the river, since there are more than 400 species reported in that area. Theres are also spectacular hikes through the forest that en at the river bank, where you can go for a swim, relax, and take the natural beauty in.
The Mountains & It's amazing Coffee!
Guatapé is located just where the Central Mountain Range ends (or begins?), which results in a varied flora and fauna and one of the most biodiverse places in the world. Walking through the mountains and its native forest to reach a hill top, a waterfall or a river is something special.
