Murals in the historic center of Orgosolo
Orgosolo is a city in the mountainous part of Sardinia known for its bloody history and magnificent murals. It became infamous as a hideout for bandits who were looking for an effective shelter in this hostile area. In the 19th and 20th centuries, there were constant quarrels, scores and murders between feuding clans.
The end of this endless war came when the army entered the city, catching and imprisoning all members of the conflicting parties. Many years later, thanks to the creation of the first mural by anarchists from Milan called Dionysos. and then art teacher Francesco del Casino, the city took on a completely new face. Street works in the form of wall murals are currently the biggest showcase of this city and attract many tourists every year.
The murals in Orgosolo weave stories about bandits, revenge and social relations of residents over the centuries. This small city has always had its own style and presented an image of the intellectual and cultural anxieties of its inhabitants, thus expressing the rebellious nature of political activists.
Orgosolo offers not only views of ancient Sardinia and untouched nature, but above all, the history of everyday life shown in an incredible form of art available to everyone.
