At the end of the day, I just want everything I play to feel good and to sound MUSICAL.
Quick aside: my first video on playing behind the beat and how it worked out for me is here:

Playing with a volume pedal really is like playing an entirely new instrument. I use mine in various ways: pure swells (no attack is heard), partial swells (end of the attack of, say, a rake IS heard), and as a way to modulate volume within a phrase. You can hear these three ways I use the volume pedal in this video.
Using a volume pedal in this way can make things sound LATE if you're not careful. Especially if, like me, you have found a comfy spot for your phrasing just behind the beat. Starting a swell after the beat can feel like you're playing too far behind (i.e., late!). It's a fine line to walk.
NOTE: during the track, you are hearing the click that I am tracking to. I know this may seem less than ideal to many of you, but it is my little way to guard against some of the copyright attacks Rick Beato and Paul Davids have highlighted lately in their videos. My thinking is that people are going to not want to sample the music from my videos and then copyright it if I have a click going through it. 🤷🏻♂️
