In episode 3, Qualcomm VP of Product Management Valerio Filauro talks through the importance of Radio Frequency Front-End (RF Front-End) and why it’s so crucial to wireless technology. Valerio also discusses the new RF Front-End technologies that will power future 5G devices, and how Snapdragon X65 makes managing the RF Front-End easier for OEMs and vendors.

The RF Front-End is a set of radio-frequency components between the modem and a mobile device’s antennas. It ultimately manages all signals sent and received over the air. Unfortunately, many either consider the Radio Frequency Front-End to be too technical or unimportant. With 5G, there now exist over 10,000 frequency combinations that the RF Front-End must manage, compared to 20 in 4G LTE.

Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 is the first complete solution from the modem to the RF Front-End. As a wholly integrated system, the complexity of RF Front-End technology is streamlined without compromising its importance. This allows OEMs and wireless vendors to spend less time on hardware integration and testing, and more time on industrial design and user interface.

In this episode in our What’s Next in 5G series, Valerio then discusses the importance of Envelope Tracking in order to utilize the full benefits of 5G on mobile devices without increasing power consumption and device heating. Qualcomm Technologies introduced the first Wideband Envelope Tracking technology for 5G to manage how much power a 5G device is using. Snapdragon X65 features the 7th generation of this technology, enhancing power efficiency by over 30% compared to average power tracker alternatives.

In addition to this, the Qualcomm introduces Artificial Intelligence to its first-in-class antenna tuning system: the Qualcomm AI-Enhanced Signal Boost. This technology continuously fine-tunes a mobile device’s antennas to give consumers the best signal possible. The system uses AI to intelligently detect hand grips and device positioning to dynamically fine-tune the antennas for optimal connection.
