Born in Alexandrette, Armenia in 1927, Boghos Gelalian was educated by the Carmelite Fathers (Italian College), first in Alexandrette and later, when forced to flee Armenia in 1939, in Tripoli, Lebanon. He later worked as pianist and arranger for Radio Chark-el -- adna (BBC section), taught piano at Notre Dame de Jamhour College and musical theory at L'École Supérieur des Lettres. Since 1961 he has taught piano and theory at the National Conservatoire of Beirut. He has been awarded numerous prizes for composition including 1st, 2nd and 4th in the Lebanese "Jeunesses Musicales" (1964), Prix du "Club du Faubourg" (1965) and Prix "Saïd Akl" (1969). Several of his works have been published abroad in France, Italy, Germany and Argentina and he is author of the book "Harmonie et Modes" (édition Ménakian, 1971). He has been honoured by France with the "Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" and also by TheVatican, when, in 1986, he was received into the "l'Ordre de St Sylvestre" by Pope Jean-Paul 11.
