Are you conducting zoom video deposition and hearings yet? If you are a lawyer who wants to succeed, you should be.
This video is intended for beginners who want to learn how to conduct a zoom hearing, zoom deposition, or zoom meeting. Here are some key takeaways you should know:
If the zoom meeting will last longer than 40 minutes, someone has to pay for a monthly account.
The host picks the date and time then gets to send out invites.
Only one party needs an account. Everyone else can join the meeting without an account via an email link.
Set a password to protect your zoom meetings from intruders.
The host can record the meeting. Others must request and obtain permission from the host to record.
Zoom is one of the many choices you have to do video depos/hearings. Skype is another example of communication software that can be used for video depositions, or online hearings. I did actually did a Minor Settlement using Skype years ago because my clients were missionaries in Panama and I had Minor Settlement Hearing in Austin TX. This was years ago before zoom was the tool of choice.

Using zoom takes a little getting used to. Good practices include using passwords for meetings, using the mute when you are not talking, and getting agreements on the record regarding video recording, reserving objections, and other normal deposition housekeeping matters.
To do a zoom video deposition, you will need a zoom deposition notice. You can find a Texas form zoom deposition notice here:

Exhibits:
The best way I have found to deal with exhibits is for the parties to submit them to the Court reporter in advance for pre-marking and have the court reporter then send a copy back to everyone. This ensures everyone is looking at a correct copy of the document that gets attached. Sometimes, exhibits may have to be marked and submitted on the fly. If it is a document being produced by the witnesses, just have them write an exhibit number rin the corner, scan it in and email it to the court reporter after the depo. You will have to have the witness hold it up to the camera or do a screen share (if it is in electronic format) if the attorneys not present need to read it during the deposition.
If the exhibit to be added on the fly comes from an attorney, he is going to have to hold it up to the camera so all can see it and then scan and email it in later.
Zoom is great for zoom client meetings, zoom business meetings, zoom court hearings, and anytime you need to meet but cannot be at the same place, same time. It has come in very handy for our office during the coronavirus stay-at-home order. You owe it to your clients to have this kind of law tech as an available option.
