Today we review the #12 best whiskey released in 2020 - Old Overholt Bottled in Bond Rye. Old Overholt BiB is not exactly a new release...the brand has been around since the 1800s and at one point put out a bonded rye but it has changed hands so many times and even had a grey period. The original whiskey was said to have once been preferred by Ulysses S. Grant and “Doc” Holliday. The original distillery was handed down through the Overholt family until the distillery was left to Andrew Mellon (of Carnegie-Mellon and Mellon Bank) who was in a partnership with an Overholt descendant. Mellon had to sell the distillery due to becoming Secretary of the Treasury during prohibition and Old Overholt continued direct lineage of distilling until the 1950's but until Jim Beam bought the brand in 1987, the whiskey was still being bottled but no one seems to know where it was being produced!! Today it is made at one of Beam’s Kentucky distilleries.
The mashbill is unknown outside of the required minimum of 51% rye but at some point in the legacy of this whiskey corn was added to the mix. The proof shows up on the nose as well as some of the rye herbal notes. BUT the palate has a touch of the herbal/rye spice and the proof disappears but sweet notes explode...caramel, butterscotch and toffee!! The finish stays sweet with rye notes but they are not aggressive and at the price of mid-to-low $20 this is a "hidden gem" of a whiskey that should be bought on sight! Cheers!!
