Thousands of tide spectators have flocked to Yanguan Town in east China's Zhejiang Province on Thursday to enjoy the annual shocking tidal bore on the Qiantang River.

Qiantang River is known for the world's largest tidal bore, which is called the Silver Dragon locally.

The best time of the year to watch the Qiantang tidal bore often coincides with the festive occasion of the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Yanguan Town in Haining City used to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors at this time of the year. But due to the lingering impact of the COVID-19 epidemic this year, the Yanguan Tidal Scenic Spot has capped the visitor flow to 14,000 people daily due to preventive restrictions.

The tidal bore is caused by the gravitational pull of the stars and planets. The centrifugal force produced by the rotation of the Earth and by the trumpet shape of the Hangzhou Bay in Zhejiang makes it easy for the tide to come in, but difficult to ebb, thus giving rise to the largest tidal bore.

The Qiantang tidal bore, which will travel more than 100 kilometers upstream from Hangzhou Bay to downtown Hangzhou, is now approaching Yanguan. When it reaches the town, it is just more than halfway through its whole journey.

The tidal bore moves very fast in the river, at a speed of more than seven meters per second and can even reach up to 13 meters per second, a speed that only sprinter like Chinese Su Bingtian can compete with.
