Henri Christophe (Haitian King) Biography - A Key Leader in the Haitian Revolution
Born Christopher Henry on the Island of San Cristóbal, Christophe was taken to Santo Domingo, where he worked in a hotel restaurant and was released. It is said that he fought during the American War of Independence in the siege of Savannah. He married María Luisa Coidovic, who gave him four children: Victor Enrique, Fernando, Athena and Amethyst Christophe (plus a stillborn son).
Christophe stood out in the rebellion of 1791, rising to the rank of general in 1802. In 1806, he participated in the coup against James I and took control of the north of the country. His main enemy was his accomplice in the conspiracy, Alexandre Pétion, who ruled the southern region in a separate republic, under his presidency. Henri proclaimed himself president of the "State of Haiti" in 1807 together with Pétion, the latter as president of the "Republic of Haiti" in opposition to the south. In 1811, he converted the State of Haiti into a kingdom and proclaimed himself king, ruling under the name of Henry I of Haiti.
