There are two types of contemplation: acquired and infused. In acquired contemplation one is able to calm themselves and enter into a quiet, simple form of prayer. People who practice other forms of meditation can often experience this type of prayer.
With infused contemplation, God is a primary actor and as a result, it would take extraordinary means for God to act in this way with a soul in the state of mortal sin.
