Since PT First is free, there are restrictions. One of the biggest restrictions is that you CANNOT use third-party plugins, UNLESS they were purchased through the Avid Marketplace.
Plugins in the Avid Marketplace are often much, much more expensive, even for the same plugins you can find elsewhere. So basically, PT First is like a 'Freemium' app.
You can use all the basic features to record and edit and mix, but if you want more options, ya gotta pay - either by purchasing plugins through the Avid Marketplace, or buying the full version.
This is NOT unique to Avid! Most companies who offer a free DAW limit what plugins can be used in them.
So, if you happen to own several plugin already, or maybe you already own the full version of Pro Tools and have 100's of plugins that work great - but you want the PT First on your laptop for some simple editing....your plugins WILL NOT work in the free version.
(Unless you bought them from the Avid Marketplace, and you probably didn't because you can get better deals everywhere else)
Let me say it again...
Even if you own a FULL, PAID version of Pro Tools, your plugins WILL NOT work in Pro Tools First.
It doesn't matter that they are AAX 64 bit, they will not work.
The point of Pro Tools First is to let people use the software for as long as they want to get a feel for it. If they like it, Avid hopes that you will purchase the paid version, or at least buy some plugins in the Marketplace.
Pro Tools First (and ALL versions of Pro Tools) only use AAX 64 bit plugins.
You CANNOT use VST plugins in ANY version of Pro Tools (unless you have a wrapper, but that's another issue)
VST does not mean 'plugin'.
VST is a FORMAT. Other DAWs adopted this format. Avid has their own format: AAX.
SO - that should finally answer all the questions about "why can't I find my plugins in Pro Tools First"
It's a built-in limitation. If you want to use third-party plugins in Pro Tools First, you must buy them from the Avid Marketplace. OR, upgrade to the full version of Pro Tools and use any AAX plugins that you want, purchased from wherever you want.
NOTE: Pro Tools First does come with several plugins. Some of them need to be installed separately from the DAW. You can find your plugins in your MyAvid account and in Avid Link.
