A rare opportunity to purchase a genuine long established spring calving herd at the start of the grazing season. On the market due to the decision to cease milk production.
Half the herd will be calved by the end of February with the remaining half due in March and a few in first week of April. The remaining cows will be in calf to A Angus AI service dates (8 week breeding period).
There is a cross section of ages with a large proportion of young cows, over 150 in lactations 1-4 with over 60 in first lactation due to very successful use of sexed semen.
The herd originated from a long established Friesian herd and a consignment of Irish x bred heifers that were bought in 10 years ago. These were then bred to Jersey sires from LIC and then back to Friesian sires also from LIC and CRV. In more recent years Jersey sires and Viking red sires have been used, Viking sires renowned for high health traits whilst maintaining stature but increasing body depth and chest width.
The mature cow weight will be 515 kg developing their full potential in lactations 3-4.
The herd has been milked OAD in the past and production has been very respectable, 4180 litres 5.22 bf and 3.89 pro. The herd is currently being milked twice per day and on this regime the cows performance has potential to be 6000 litres.
Herd health wise the cows are not vaccinated for anything and regularly milk tested. They have all been BVD tag and tested with no PI cows in the herd. Johnes monitoring takes place and strict management protocols in place with very low incidences.
The farm has never had a major TB breakdown just had the odd single reactor with the last one being June 2019, nearly 4 years clean.
The herd is for sale as a whole or will split up but smallest group size would have to be 40 and they would have to be a cross section of cows.
This herd will not be around for long due to the very high demand for spring calved cows, viewing is highly recommended at your earliest convenience.
