The MK19 was designed in the mid-1960's and was extensively used during the late stages of the Vietnam war. The MK19 was the first automatic grenade launcher designed for ground use. In the USA it is designated as a grenade machine gun. It is a blowback operated weapon that fires high velocity 40mm grenades. The MK19 is still appreciated greatly for its capability to fire high numbers of 40-millimeter grenades precisely out to a distance of approximately 1,500 meters (approx 4,921 feet). Because the round can pierce two inches of armor, it can damage or destroy lightly armored vehicles. On impact, the grenade can kill anyone within a five-meter (approx 16 feet) radius and wound anyone within a 15-meter (approx. 49 feet) radius. MK19 has seen considerable wartime service since including operations in the Vietnam War, the Gulf War , and the Lebanon War as well as the American involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. There have been reports that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have received a new batch of MK19s from the United States to help the country fend off a potential Russian invasion.
