Never a Bystander, a 30-minute documentary, tells the story of Irene Butter, a remarkable woman who chose to be a survivor of the Holocaust—not a victim. A contemporary of Anne Frank who survived a concentration camp, Dr. Butter has shared her story in schools for decades, and by her example, shown how it is possible to live a full and engaged life after surviving trauma. She lives her conviction that as activists, not bystanders, we can each make a positive impact in our own small corner of the world.
Dr. Butter's experiences during the Holocaust underscore the importance of the choices we make. In her gentle and gracious way, she helps students to see that "there is no such thing as an innocent bystander." We can take a stand on important social issues, and help each other work toward the greater good to make the world a better place. Dr. Butter's story transcends the Holocaust—her life lessons can be applied to us all.
