Join Dr. Joe Reczek of Denison University and Dr. Kyle Tsai of Owens Corning for this virtual session of Kids Tech University 2021!
Have you ever looked through a microscope? Sometimes everyday things look a lot differently when seeing them magnified through the lens of a microscope! If you’ve used one, chances are it was an optical microscope that bends light to make things look bigger (just like our eyes!). An optical microscope can magnify images to look about 1,000 times bigger! That’s pretty good… but in this KTU session you’ll be learning about and seeing first hand a microscopy that can magnify images to look about 1,000,000 times bigger!! (Yes, a million!) The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) at Denison University is an amazing instrument that “sees” images using electrons instead of light! Not only can it view things 1000 times smaller than a normal microscopy it can give lots of other cool information, like what elements a thing is made of! Get ready to see the world like never before, at the Nanoscale!
