Relics of Pope Saint John Paul II have been stolen from a cathedral in Italy. A gold reliquary containing droplets of the late pontiff’s blood was discovered to be missing from a chapel within the Cathedral Basilica of Spoleto in Umbria on the evening of September the 23rd. In a video message issued the next day, Archbishop Renato Boccardo of the Archdiocese of Spoleto-Norcia, pleaded for the return of the relic and described its theft as, “a serious act.”
President Trump picks Amy Coney Barrett to fill Supreme Court vacancy
The United States Senate could confirm Catholic mother-of-seven, Amy Coney Barrett, to the U.S. Supreme Court as early as the end of October. That’s according to the timetable set out by the man who chairs the Senate’s Judiciary Committee, the panel charged with vetting Judge Barrett prior to that Senate vote. Senator Lindsey Graham says that Judge Barrett’s confirmation hearing will begin on October the 12th. That could see his committee approve her nomination as early as October the 22nd whereupon it would then go to a vote on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Amy Coney Barrett was nominated to the Supreme Court on Saturday by President Donald Trump following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg last week.
Polish President Duda meets Pope Francis at the Vatican
Pope Francis has personally thanked the President of Poland for promoting the married family as the basis of a good society. That’s according to comments made by President Andrzej Duda following his audience with the Holy Father at the Vatican on September the 25th. President Duda said he was, “deeply moved” by the Pope’s gratitude for his pursuance of pro-family policies. Following the meeting, the President and his wife, Agata, attended Holy Mass at the tomb of Pope Saint John Paul II in Saint Peter’s Basilica where, they said, they requested the saint’s intercession for their native land.
Archbishop of Mosul nominated for Sakharov prize
A Catholic bishop from Iraq has been nominated for a prestigious annual human rights prize which is awarded by the European Parliament. Chaldean Archbishop Najib Mikhael Moussa of Mosul has been nominated for the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by European Parliamentarians after he ensured the safe evacuation of Christians, Syriacs and Chaldeans from Mosul following Islamic State’s invasion of the northern Iraqi city in August 2014.
U.S. politicians express concern over rise in anti-Catholic attacks in North America
A group of sixteen U.S. Congressmen and woman have written to the United States Justice Department to ask them to protect the country’s Catholic population in the wake of a series of seemingly anti-Catholic attacks across the U.S. in recent months. The group, led by Indiana Congressman Jim Banks, addressed their letter of concern to the U.S. Attorney General, Bill Barr. Congressman Banks said that, by some estimates, there have been 70 anti-Catholic incidents in North America this year with the vast majority occurring in the past four months.
Catholic nun named among TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people
TIME magazine has named a Catholic nun as one of the most influential people of 2020. Sister Norma Pimentel is the Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. As part of the Diocese of Brownsville, Sister Norma’s organization provides emergency assistance, homelessness prevention, disaster relief, clinical counseling, pregnancy care, and food programs to people in the border region including immigrants and refugees.
Thousands converge on Washington D.C. to pray for healing, peace and unity
Thousands of Christians converged on Washington, D.C, on Saturday to ask Almighty God for healing, peace and unity across the United States. The Washington Prayer March was organized by the Protestant pastor, Franklin Graham. The march started at the Lincoln Memorial and ended at the U.S. Capitol. Participants prayed silently at seven stops along the way for specific intentions including asking for God’s forgiveness; praying for national peace and security; for the end to abortion; the end to the COVID pandemic; and racial harmony across the United States.
