PERIPrem (Perinatal Excellence to Reduce Injury in Premature Birth) is a unique perinatal care bundle that is improving outcomes for very premature babies across the West and South West regions, helping to achieve the aim of the NHS Long Term Plan to reduce newborn brain injury and mortality by 50% by 2025.

Undeterred by the Covid-19 pandemic, PERIPrem created a community of clinicians, dedicated to transforming the delivery of care for mothers and preterm babies. The project is achieving life-changing improvements to the way the most vulnerable babies are cared for and accelerated perinatal working culture and innovation. The project embedded quality improvement methodology and coaching in units, alongside an emphasis on building strong and effective teams.

Development of the care bundle comprising 11 evidence-based interventions was led by the West of England and South West AHSNs. In partnership with the South West Neonatal Network, every maternity and neonatal unit in the region has been involved, along with parent groups, to co-design, produce and test the care bundle.

Hear about our impacts to date and how PERIPrem, and our previous work on the national PReCePT programme, are supporting the ambitions of the AHSN Network patient safety plan. The learning from implementation of PERIPRem also aligns with many recommendations from the Ockenden review and Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) programme. This session shares key lessons learned during implementation, particularly around sustaining innovations and improvement in the longer term.
