The balling disc pellet consists of a circular disc or pan that is typically inclined at an angle of around 45 degrees to the horizontal. The disc is mounted on a rotating shaft and is driven by a motor. The raw materials, including iron ore fines, binders, and additives, are continuously fed onto the disc's surface.
As the disc rotates, the raw materials move towards the center due to the centrifugal force. The rotation of the disc and the angle of inclination cause the materials to tumble and mix, creating a homogenous mixture. At the same time, the binding agents and additives help to agglomerate the fine particles into larger, spherical pellets.
The moisture content in the mixture is carefully controlled to achieve the desired pellet size and strength. The formation of pellets occurs as the moistened particles adhere to one another and grow in size through a process known as coalescence.
Once the pellets reach the desired size and consistency, they are discharged from the disc and conveyed to a separate unit for further processing, such as drying and hardening in a pelletizing furnace. The resulting iron ore pellets exhibit improved handling, transportation, and smelting properties, making them ideal for use in blast furnaces to produce molten iron for steel production.
