French President Emmanuel Macron is taking a big gamble with his own political future with a surprise announcement that came hours after a massive drubbing in the EU polls.
His decision to announce snap polls comes after Macron's party came a distant second to right-wing leader Marine Le Pen's party National Rally in the EU elections. Marine Le Pen's party won 32% of the vote, more than double what Macron's Renaissance Party got at 15%
The French have spoken and this historic election shows that when the people vote, the people win.
The June 30th polls come just a month before Paris hosts the Olympics. The second vote will take place on July 7.
Macron's surprise decision could be the biggest opportunity yet for Marine Le Pen's far right party to get a real shot at power.
Macron's Renaissance party currently has 169 lawmakers in the lower house out of a total of 577. The National Rally (RN) has 88. If the far-right party wins a majority in these elections, Macron would lose power to set the domestic agenda, which includes security, even though he will still control defence and foreign policy decisions.
