During an ultra-endurance cycling event in Montana, competitive cyclist Leah Lokan was attacked by a grizzly bear in July 2021. Despite warnings from her loved ones, Lokan camped in an area known for grizzly bear activity. She was awakened during the night by the bear sniffing around her head, causing her to scream for help. The bear fled due to the noise, but Lokan chose to stay in her tent. She attempted to keep the bear away by storing her food away from her tent, but overlooked a bag of dried blueberries and a saddlebag of food near the entrance. The same bear returned and attacked Lokan, while her camping companions were unable to help. An almost empty can of bear spray was found at the scene.
