Diabetes & depression are metabolically as well psychosocially connected. If you have diabetes, get medical help if your signs of depression persist beyond 2 weeks. If you have depression, you must check for diabetes every three to six months.
Both diabetes and depression have underlying metabolic syndrome and blood glucose dysfunction mechanisms. We do not know as yet how exactly they are connected. Many neurochemical issues in depression can arise due to abnormal blood glucose behavirour.
There are other psychosocial issues that may make one of them cause the other and vice versa. For example, diabetes management is very stressful and can make a person feel inadequate and depressed. Similarly, if a person is already depressed, she may not take proper care of her health, may not be physically active, or may not seek medical help in time for managing diabetes.
