Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu has found numerous irregularities in the payment of government's COVID-19 temporary relief grant. Releasing his first report into the R500 billion aid package on Wednesday, Makwetu said his team had uncovered instances of fraud and corruption which are now being handed over to law enforcement agencies.The AG's team also found the Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme payments had been made to government officials, thousands of deceased people, minors not eligible for employment as well as prison inmates. The audit stems from President Cyril Ramaphosa's request to track how funds meant for COVID-19 relief were spent. It focused on the R147.4 billion intended to support businesses and employees, social relief of distress grants and the procurement of personal protective equipment or PPEs. The Minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi, said at a press briefing on Wednesday that the Commissioner of the Unemployment Insurance Fund or UIF, Teboho Maruping, had been suspended as the corruption happened on his watch
