One of the most impressive sights in Angkor is the Victory Gate of Angkor Thom, a monumental archway that marks the entrance to the ancient city. The gate is adorned with four giant faces of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, each facing a different cardinal direction. The gate is also flanked by two rows of statues depicting the gods and demons of Hindu mythology, engaged in a tug-of-war over the serpent Vasuki. The Victory Gate of Angkor Thom is a symbol of the triumph of Buddhism over Hinduism, as well as the power and glory of the Khmer empire.
