In this episode we show how we upgraded our SD50 sail drives on our Lagoon 450 to alleviate the problem of the slipping cone clutch, which is an extremely common issue with these saildrives. Also, on our way into Rio Dulce, Guatemala, the sail drive developed a loud, disconcerting ticking noise, which I had no idea where it was coming from after dismantling the unit. However, as a huge coincidence, while upgrading this unit, the ticking noise disappeared.
Since this episode was filmed we have sailed over 2000 miles, using the engines on regular occasions, and the sail drives have not skipped a beat. You could contact saildrives@yahoo.com if you want to upgrade yours.
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged 2012 Lagoon 450 Catamaran bought in Tortola, BVI at the beginning of 2018. Colin and his friend spent 4 months getting her seaworthy, before setting sail across the Caribbean. Follow our journey as we continue to fix her and eventually circumnavigate the globe!
