12. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Rita Moura, Portuguese pavement course coordinator:
"I think Portuguese cobblestones are like that: 'Love them or leave them' .... since we're not able to maintain the quality of the pavement there are many people who would like to see them removed, but this pavement is a part of our 'carioca' (inhabitant of Rio de Janeiro) identity."

"It's a very large area. The Portuguese cobblestones nowadays cover around one million two hundred thousand square metres. Besides the seaside, the inner streets of the neighborhoods are our greatest challenge because we have some enemies of the Portuguese pavements, such as heavy vehicles that go on the sidewalks and utility companies, such as the telephones, who do repairs and don't fix the pavement properly."
