Amid mounting tensions between Turkey and Greece in the waters of the East Mediterranean Sea, a shocking event occurred. A Greek Navy warship reportedly opened fire on a civilian ship belonging to a Turkish citizen.
According to the Turkish security news agency quoted VIVA Military. The shooting occurred at around 03:40 local time.
A private boat manned by two Turks and a Syrian was suddenly fired on by a Greek Navy warship.
Based on information published by the Turkish Coast Guard Command, the shooting took place on the island of Rhodes, Greece, or about 13 kilometers from the Marmaris District, Mugla Province, Turkey.
Four coast guard ships and a Turkish dive team were deployed at the scene of the shooting. But when he arrived at the waters, the Greek Navy warships had fled.
As a result of the shooting, the two Turks on board suffered injuries, while the Syrians suffered broken bones.
The condition of the private vessel was severe enough that when the Turkish Coast Guard evacuated it, it sank when towed. Meanwhile, when the victim was immediately taken to the Marmaris State Hospital.
Until now, it is not known why the Greek Navy warships fired on civilian ships. The Marmaris public prosecutor has been assigned to investigate the case.
The shooting incident was quite surprising, because not far from the location of the shooting, Turkish warships and Greek warships were facing each other in a position ready to attack each other.
Tensions in the East Mediterranean Sea peaked after Turkey decided to continue exploration of seismic surveys initiated by the Antalya Navtex Station in the south and east of Greece's Kastellorizo Island.
This project was postponed by Turkey due to opposition from Greece regarding the agreement on the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
In fact, Turkey suddenly deployed its warships to the Mediterranean Sea following an agreement between Greece and Egypt regarding the EEZ. Turkey did not accept the agreement and held war games under the code name NAVTEX.
And most recently, Turkey deliberately challenged the Greek Armed Forces by distributing photos of sightings of the seismic exploration ship Oruc Reis which was back in service in the Mediterranean Sea. However, the Oruc Reis ship sailed under tight escort of Turkish military warships.
Meanwhile, the situation in the East Mediterranean Sea is tense. Greek warships continue to monitor the movements of the Oruc Reis Ship and the Turkish warships. The warships between the two countries are also very close and are prone to armed confrontations.
