In light of the terrorist attacks on American soil in Oklahoma City and New York City, Lunden sought out the volunteer group called NEST -- the nuclear Emergency Search Team -- which will respond to such a threat. Once every seven years, the U.S. government undertakes a multi-million -dollar urban war game, hiding a simulated nuclear device, and NEST has four days to find and defuse the bomb before the hypothetical disaster. Joan Lunden is the first journalist ever to film this exercise, accompanying NEST to New Orleans, learning with them how to "think like terrorist" as they race the clock. As part of the story, she also went to Los Alamos, New Mexico, where she became the first journalist to hold the heart of a plutonium nuclear bomb.
