Some names are ubiquitous with off-road trucks and equipment: Raptor, Power Wagon, Rebel and, over at Chevrolet, it’s all about the ZR2. For the 2024 model year, Chevrolet now offers a ZR2 off-road trim on three of its pickup trucks: the mid-size Colorado, the full-size Silverado 1500 and the heavy-duty Silverado 2500. But wait, there’s more: If the ZR2 isn’t quite brawny enough for you, there’s a Bison edition sitting above even that, which brings extra bits and pieces from off-road overlanding equipment company AEV to the party. It’s all meant to provide customers with a choice. Which super-capable off-road Chevrolet pickup best meets your needs — or will at least fit in your driveway?
All ZR2s share some common off-road bits, some common interior appointments, and all come with some remarkable off-road capability — but is the idea of “one sausage, three sizes” that German automakers used to do applicable now to off-road trucks? Will one ‘Murrican hot dog in three sizes work? Or are these three Chevy showroom brothers sufficiently different from each other to warrant being considered separately?
