ATP synthase is linked to the electron transport chain. This chain comprises the protein complexes I, II, III, and IV, which transport protons from the mitochondrial matrix into the intramembranous space, creating a proton gradient in which energy is stored. For this energy to be used universally, it needs to be converted into chemical energy, in this case, ATP. The conversion of energy stored in the proton gradient to ATP is mediated by ATP synthase.
