Gummy bear implants are silicone gel implants that are a little more tightly woven. That means that the silicone gel stays together a little bit better than the other silicone implants. Obviously if there was a leak, it tends to stay intact, but also that particular implant keeps its shape a little bit better.
There are pros and cons to that. In a patient that desires a particular shaped implant that is a teardrop shaped implant, and somebody who has no breast tissue that wants a very natural looking breast, a gummy bear teardrop shaped implant is fantastic. There's a real benefit to that because it maintains that teardrop shape. If you lie on your side, it won't spread. It won't change shapes. It tends to look very natural in that way.
There are some people that don't want that look. There are some people that want a little bit more mature look to their breasts, that is a little bit more fullness on the bottom that does not have so much projection, so a more traditional silicone gel implant would be of more benefit.
Other benefits to the gummy bear implants is they tend to maintain their forward projection a little bit better than more traditional silicone gel implants. Consequently, there are some patients that is advantageous to do that in. The other advantage is that they tend to stay in place a bit better with a textured outer covering. Studies have shown that gummy bear implants with a textured covering versus other implants tend to stay softer longer. Those are the benefits of the gummy bear implants.
