In this video myself and Tom decided on road trip down south to target some Undulate Rays under the cover of darkness and then first light head too a second location to target a Sting Ray.
Mid week everything was looking perfect tide times the weather etc all spot on but as usual the weather man gets it wrong and the wind took a big swing to south westerly which was in our face. Not being big gusts we still took the gamble and headed on down.
All the way down it hammered with rain and we were nearly at the stage of turning around and coming home but decided if the weather was rubbish we would still try for the stingers at first light.
Just as we drove through the small village towards the mark it stopped raining so we couldnt have timed it any better.
All set up and first casts out we were fishing an hour before high water.
With the reports of small tope being caught all a long the coast we had some lovely small joey mackerel still perfect undulate bait size but we decide a wire bite end was the safe option just incase a tope decided to take our ray baits.
It didnt take me long to hook the first ray with a nice fillet of mackerel and whole squid wrap on and up and over rig 4/0 Tamer & 4/0 catfish pennel hook. With an 8oz lead fired into the darkness.
Wasnt long before the wire trace went away and mackerel squid wraps were getting fired at range to the waiting pack of undulates. My first 3 casts produced some perfect looking undulate rays.
It was then toms turn to get himself into his first ever undulate ray and from there on i managed to find another 2 rays and a small smooth hound pup all within the first 4 hours of fishing.
From there on we lost a lot of depth and the fish switched off so packed up early and headed to mark number 2 to get there ready for low water.
Mark 2 was a shot in the dark hoping to get a Sting ray but after the session on the undulates we were happy to go home but having bought rag worm we pushed on with no sleep to hopefully bag the second target.
Fishing hard all morning with not even a tap we started to get hit with rafts of weed from an hour before high water so we struggled for another hour until high water and decided enough was enough and packed up.
Not so eventful on the stingrays but after a bumper night we were more than happy with the trip and managing at least 1 target.
My tackle used for this trip was as follows
