Ghat/kat is a leaf which - when chewed - released amphetamine-like compounds producing a stimulatory effect in users. In 1980, the WHO listed ghat as a drug of abuse and it has been banned or controlled in most Western countries.
Unusually, however, khat remains legal in Israel - due largely to its traditional use among Yemeni Jews who migrated to the Jewish State in large number during and after the foundation of the State.
