Anubis is an Ancient Egyptian God whose body is that of a man with the head of a jackal. Anubis is the Latin name given to the Egyptian god of the underworld. Before the arrival of the Greeks into Egypt in 7th century BCE, the god we today refer to as Anubis was actually referred to as “Anpu” or “Inpu”, meaning “to decay” signifying his early association with death. According to the Greek writer, Plutarch of Chaeronea, Anubis the son of Nephthys along with Osiris. Anubis was credited with inventing the mummification process, enabling mortals to live on in the afterlife. Anubis first mummified his father Osiris.
Anubis is known as the “Lord of the Necropolis“. According to Egyptian mythology, the main mission of the Egyptian gods of Anubis was to bring the spirit of the dead to the other world or the Duat, Duat is the realm of the dead in ancient Egyptian mythology. Anubis is the protector of the graves, guides individuals to the afterlife; and “Weigh the Heart”, that means judgment of the soul. His most famous statue is perhaps the Anubis Shrine which was discovered in the tomb of the famous Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun.
