Dr. Fatima Fayyaz’s primary area of research is medieval Central Asian hagiographical literature, modern Afghan-Persian literature, Iranian heroic poems or epics, and Persianate codicology. Her work emphasizes the cross-cultural connections of the Central Asian Sufis, particularly in the medieval and early Mughal periods, all across the South Asian region. She has also written about and translated the works of young Afghan female poets who otherwise remain a neglected subject in the Persian academic world. Her current research includes the study of the influence of Fersowsi Tusi’s (d. 1020 AD) magnum opus Shahnameh or the Persian Book of Kings, on the Persian lyrical poetry and prose of the later Mughal period in the subcontinent, particularly on the works of Ghalib (d. 1869 AD).
