Animotion arose from the ashes of the group Red Zone from Los Angeles, California in 1983. The new group was to be fronted by vocalists Astrid Plane and Bill Wadhams from The Billy Bond Band and supported by the ex Red Zone members keyboardist Paul Antonelli, bassist Charles Ottavio and drummer David "Frenchy" O'Brien.
A lead guitarist, Don Kirkpatrick was brought into the band just in time to record their biggest hit "Obsession".
You may not know that Animotion's version was a cover of the Holly Night & Michael des Barres who both wrote and recorded their version for the 1983 male stripper flick "A Night In Heaven", but as a single it did not chart.
1985 comes along and the song was presented to Wadhams by producer John Ryan, who felt that it had hit potential. Wadhams was not impressed with the Knight & Des Barres version but once Ryan got down to mixing the song, Bill gained an appreciation for it.
The original song had spoken lyrics which Wadhams kept, but he also sang the lyrics which followed the spoken words creating a sinister sound that was firmly grounded by the beefy guitars and that crazy back beat.
Released on January 26, 1985 it peaked at #6 on the Hot100 but had petered out at #35 on the disco chart when it was released in late 1984.
VH1 featured the song on their "One Hit Wonders" show and featured Plane and Wadhams. However, Animotion were not one hit wonders, the follow up "Let Him Go" peaked at #39 and then "Room To Move" hit #9 on the pop charts in 1989.
By the time of their third album, the last of the original members had left and 1989's "Room To Move" LP was completed with a totally new band which then broke up. A Portland, OR disc jockey got the original band back together for a one off reunion concert that sold out. They have kept in touch since and have been performing and recording putting out the most recent endeavor "Raise Your Expectations" released in the US by Invisible Hands Music.
