Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat recently proposed that youth who have been completely radicalised in Kashmir may have to be put through deradicalisation in camps.
For a comprehensive approach, a counter or de-radicalisation response will have to operate at seven levels to dissuade youth from joining terrorist groups.
These are : individual, family, community, education, employer and media, government and security forces and international community. Individually youth will have to be constantly guided to stay on the path of non-violence, role of family and friends assumes importance, the community also is an essential group that can influence the youth and keep them away from violence.
Education both syllabi and institutions are an important intervention for counter radicalisation. Employers have an increasing role to play while the media needs to project the inhumanity in acts of terror. Meanwhile the government with policies and guidance to security forces will take the lead while the international community can place checks and balances.
