The top 10 newly discovered species of 2012:
10. Pterinopelma sazimai - A breathtakingly beautiful blue tarantula at risk of extinction due to habitat loss and exploitation by the pet trade.
9. Diania cactiformis - An ancient, spiny creature nicknamed the "walking cactus" that may have used its bristly legs to capture prey.
8. Crurifarcimen vagans - A millipede that's so big, it looks like a sausage.
7. Meconopsis autumnalis - A yellow poppy that blooms in the autumn monsoon season and can only be reached by hiking miles into the Himalayan wilderness.
6. Spongiforma squarepantsii - A new mushroom that can be squeezed like a sponge.
