ABOUT THIS GAME

The all-time classic Streets of Rage, known as Bare Knuckle (ベア・ナックル Bea Nakkuru) in Japan, is a trilogy of beat ‘em up known for this timeless gameplay and electronic dance influenced music. Streets of Rage 4 builds upon the classic trilogy’s gameplay with new mechanics, beautiful hand drawn visuals and a God tier soundtrack.

An iconic series like Streets of Rage got its iconic characters: Axel, Blaze, Adam and other veterans reunited to clean up the streets. With some brand-new moves and kickass tracks to take a listen, our heroes are ready to dish out beatdowns to a fledgling group of ill-advised criminals in full force.

Streets of Rage 4 will be the first entry to the core series in 25 years, standing as Axel, Adam and Blaze’s glorious return to serving up side-scrolling beatdowns. With lush hand-drawn animations, new combat abilities, and fresh tracks from an amazing team of composers, Streets of Rage 4 will be a masterful tribute to and revitalization of the classic action fans adore

The series is known for its electronic dance influenced music around the world. The soundtrack of Streets of Rage 4 is handled by an all-star line-up of musicians like Yuzō Koshiro, Motohiro Kawashima, Yoko Shimomura, Harumi Fujita, Keiji Yamagishi and many more whom will create new amazing tracks for this new episode of the Streets of Rage series.

Amongst the best beat’em up series ever created, jammin’ ‘90s beats and over the top street fighting, the iconic series Streets of Rage comes back with a masterful tribute to and revitalization of the classic action fans adore.

Food: To grab food on the ground players have now another button designed just for it. It’s a welcoming change that contrasts previous games because sometimes you could eating food by mistake since the attack button and the eating food button were the same. To avoid this, players would have to avoid attack near food in previous titles but now this is no longer a problem!

Items: It’s a small new feature but the fact that you can now grab a thrown item in midair. You can throw an object at your enemies and right away grab it in midair. Spamming this attack can really help you get away from, otherwise, dangerous situations. However, you need to be careful with some enemies that can also do the same to you! Aside from this, characters couldn't perform different special abilities with certain items like in older games. Only Blaze could perform a special ability with a knife or only Axel could perform a special ability with a pipe, etc.

There’s another cool feature that was implemented in this game: The Combo Streak. Basically, it counts the number of times you attack in a row without taking any damage. If you take damage or lose too much time to perform the next attack the combo breaks. Combos are important to gain extra points and thus extra lives!

Overall, gameplay of Streets of Rage 4 is fairly good, but it could be so much better and more polished so... guess it was a bit of a disappointment to me due to the, somewhat, unbalanced gameplay. Some previous games, while not perfect, feel a bit more polished and well designed.

Characters/Enemies
There’s a lot of content in this game regarding the playable Characters since you can have up to 17 choices! You start out only with a small range of playable characters, 4 to be more precise, but as you play the game various times you will earn enough points to unlock all the other characters. 12 out of the 17 characters are simply the retro versions from previous titles and they maintain the same abilities that they had on those games too. Playing with retro characters was a really cool feature, but cool to see all characters having the “modern approach” too.

There is one or two are pretty fun (like Nora or Shiva) but most of them are a bit plain and/or just frustrating. As previously said, the white shield ability that Bosses have can get really annoying, especially in some bosses in particular like The Commissioner or Barbon because they can hit you very fast and are immune to your attacks.
