Gus Van Sant emerged as one of the most exciting talents of the late-'80s/early-'90s independent film scene, yet he has also been able to excel in Hollywood as a top director. He is one of few players who can easily flow between the independent and studio worlds without compromise. In an evening punctuated with excerpts from his films, Van Sant is joined by writer-film critic-producer Scott Macaulay for a discussion of his extraordinary ability to tell a story and the art of filmmaking inside and outside the studio system.
