After breaking down in the Weald on my last trip out. It was a nice enough dry day to diagnose what went wrong. To do this I used a lead to enter the Versys 650 diagnostic mode which shows the error via a code by flashing the FI light.

This is simple enough and easy enough to be something anyone can try before bringing your bike in to the garage.
