Speaker: Dr. Hal Weeks
Topic: Childe Hassam created an estimated 240 paintings over 30 years of visiting Appledore Island. Many of his early works focused on Celia Thaxter’s garden, but after her death, he painted at numerous spots around the island. Locating the sites of many paintings relies on matching geologic features that Hassam realistically incorporated into his paintings. He visited and portrayed several locations repeatedly during his visits to Appledore, and this talk will focus on three of these.
Bio: Hal Weeks is a long-term Shoaler. While conducting his doctoral research on tide pool ecosystems and sticklebacks, he co-founded Field Animal Behavior in 1983. Although his professional work focused on fish conservation and fishery management, well-timed vacations enabled Hal to return to Appledore to continue teaching FAB over the years. In addition to his faculty position, he also served as the SML Assistant Director from 2007 to 2015. Throughout the years, Hal spent time locating and photographing sites depicted in Hassam paintings, and he assisted with the development of the 2016 exhibition of Hassam’s works from Appledore Island.
