From its inception in 1948, through the 1950s-70s, Irish women were amongst the largest groups directly recruited to train and work as nurses in the NHS. The Irish Nurses in the NHS is a 3 year (2022-2024) oral history project led by Professor Louise Ryan, London Metropolitan University, Grainne McPolin, a retired nurse and now independent documentary maker, with research assistant Neha Doshi.
The project involves over 40 interviews with Irish-born nurses across Britain. In this presentation, the team will present findings from their interviews in Liverpool. They will explore the nurses' stories of recruitment, training and early experiences on the wards during the 1950s-70s as well as the social scene in Liverpool.
The research project has received funding from the Institute of Irish Studies, University of Liverpool, as well as the Irish Department for Foreign Affairs (Irish Abroad Unit), the Burdett Trust for Nursing, the London Irish Centre and the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.
