If you plant the tomatoes early in plastic containers, the soil in the containers will be warmer than the ground and therefore encourage growth.
Planting deep will encourage more root growth and and a stronger more productive plant.
Best varieties for cool climates
One of the best of these is a variety called 'Legend'. It is parthenocarpic, so it can can fruit in colder zones as it will set fruit without pollination. It is also resistant to blight
Bred in the North West America it has proved itself over the years. It produces medium sized rounded fruits that are naturally sweet in taste.
This is a determinate type, excellent for slicing and salads and it also has fewer seeds than most and fruits at around 65 days
Stupice is another, this one is from Czechoslovakia, it is an indeterminate type, fruit early in the season at around 55 days.
Black Prince fruits at around 70 days, indeterminate, red fruit with a black tinge through the shoulder and fruits at around 70 days.
Latah is an early fruiting variety.
