벌써 총통 대접받는 차이잉원
Voting has just wrapped up in Taiwan in parliamentary and presidential elections with the island's relationship with China a key issue.
The governing party,... the Kuomintang or K-M-T,... is facing a strong challenge from the traditionally pro-independence Democratic Progressive party,... led by Tsai Ing-wen.
The results are expected in the next hour or so.
The election results could mark a turning point in Taiwan's democracy and relationship with Beijing.
For more details,... we are going to connect to U-Jean Jung,... a Reuters correspondent based in Taipei.
U-Jean,... It looks as though Taiwan is going to have its first female leader,... how will the Chinese mainland respond to Tsai Ing-wen's expected victory... and we know she favors more independence from China,.. but how far do you think she'll go?
Hi Mark, I’m outside the head quarters of the Democratic Progressive Party, this is Tsai Ing-wen’s party, the candidate who is most likely to win the presidency.
Voting booths have closed earlier in the day and we are now waiting for the election results to come out.
Everyone I’ve spoken to including experts and just ordinary voters say they are sure that Tsai Ing-wen will win.
Should she become president, she will be Taiwan’s first female leader.
On her China policy: Tsai has been very ambiguous about her China policy. except that she will “maintain the status quo” and she will not “provoke China.
And experts I’ve been speaking to say, she will in deed maintain the status quo as her next job would be to gain trust from Beijing as well as the people in Taiwan. So she will in deed maintain the status quo.
So, we’ll have to wait and see. China is watching very closely on the outcome. And the next president has one of of the world’s toughest relationships: cross-strait ties with China. Back to you Mark.
