Initiation of breastfeeding.
How to make sure your baby latches properly during breastfeeding.Correct attachement
Ensuring a proper latch is crucial for successful breastfeeding. Here are steps to help achieve correct attachment:
1. **Positioning:** Hold your baby close with their nose aligned to your nipple. Make sure their body is facing yours.
2. **Support:** Use pillows or cushions to support your baby at breast level. A comfortable position helps both you and your baby.
3. **Nipple to Nose:** Bring your baby's nose to your nipple, allowing them to tilt their head back slightly. This encourages a wide mouth opening.
4. **Wait for a Wide Mouth:** Wait for your baby to open their mouth wide, like a yawn, before bringing them onto the breast.
5. **Chin First:** Bring your baby to the breast with their chin leading. Their mouth should cover a large portion of the areola, not just the nipple.
6. **Lip Flange:** Ensure your baby's lips are flanged outward, not tucked in. This helps create a better seal.
7. **Suckling:** Your baby should have both lips flanged, their tongue underneath the breast, and a rhythmic sucking motion.
8. **Comfort:** If it hurts, gently insert your pinky finger between your baby's gums to break the suction and try latching again.
Remember, it may take some practice for both you and your baby. If you experience persistent issues, seek guidance from a lactation consultant or your healthcare provider.
