Sipping fieldfares

The pond has iced over but the ice hasn't quite covered the water at the edges. They look adorable the way they dip their heads in tandem!

Fieldfares

Fieldfares are interesting birds. Members of the thrush family they are winter migrants (flying in from Scandinavia each year) and are only seen in gardens when the countryside is frozen and they cannot dig out the worms and invertebrates they usually live off. Far prettier in colouring than our native thrush, they then tend to raid fruit harvests. When ponds ice over it is difficult for birds to get water and this has clearly drawn such a large flock here.
